It’s summertime!  Like most of us, you are probably making plans for summer vacation and like most of us you may be concerned about how to maintain your fitness goals while getting R and R.  For many people, exercise plans and food goals go out the door with the suitcases.  Don’t be that guy/girl! Trust me, you CAN enjoy your vacation and stay on track at the same time! Here’s a sneak peek into some of my tips and tricks to keep goals in site during your vacation.

Exercise:

Indoors: Have 10 minutes when you first get up in your hotel room?  Try 5 rounds of the following: 15 squats, 10 situps, 5 pushups.

Outdoors: Wanna go explore the local terrain of your vacation destination? Try the Lamppost Workout:  Walk/Jog until you get to a lamppost and do 10 squats.  Run/Sprint to the next lamppost and then do 10 pushups (ground, curb, step, wall…whatever is available).  Alternate high intensity (run/sprint) and low intensity (walk/jog) cardio for 6 consecutive lampposts doing the following strength building exercises: 20 jumping jacks, 10 lunges, 10 burpees, 10 step ups (when you find a step) or high knees.  Then head back the way you came doing the last strength set at your home destination.

Eating:

When you are heading out for your various excursions take a few bags of nuts, a couple pieces of fruit or a whole food bar to help curb the temptations.  Once you have a tummy with substance inside it’ll be much easier to resist or to have less of what you might otherwise gobble up.

Have you had success with your own vacation workout or have something new in mind you want to try this year?  Comment below.  We’ll all benefit from the collective fitness wisdom!
